1960 - Aretha Franklin performed in New York for the first time at the Village Vanguard.
1964 - Soul singer Sam Cooke was gunned down at the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles, California.
1970 - The film, The Magic Christian, starring Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr, premiered in London.
1971 - Carly Simon released her album Anticipation.
1972 - Genesis performed their first show in America at Brandeis University in Massachusetts.
1976 - Bob Seger released his classic album Night Moves.
1976 - Ace Frehley of KISS had a close call when he got shocked onstage during a concert in Florida. The guitarist touched a light that had short-circuited, nearly electrocuting him. Frehley was carted off the stage but came back ten minutes later to finish the concert.
1988 - Don Henley, Tom Petty, Graham Nash and Bonnie Raitt played a benefit show in tribute to Roy Orbison at the Wiltern Theatre.
1997 - Jewel, Sinead O'Connor and Emmylou Harris joined up to perform the Beatles' "In My Life" at the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo.
2001 - KISS bassist Gene Simmons sat down for an interview with Matt Lauer on Today to promote his just released book Kiss and Make-Up.
